Last week when I came home from work, I couldn't connect to the
internet. I tried the usual -- rebooting the cable modem, and computer,
but still no luck. It was strange -- my computer would get or renew a
lease on a DHCP IP address, but it would not send or receive any other
internet traffic packets -- I mean ZERO.

I called tech support, and after having me go through their
troubleshooting steps, they said that my (Norton) firewall was blocking
Adelphia (even though I turned the firewall OFF), and I needed to
contact Norton.

After my contact with tech support, I tried using the connection repair
button a few times, ran Spybot S&D, Adaware, and Norton antivirus scan,
and still nothing. I did a system restore to the last restore point,
and still could not connect. I suspected I might have a corrupted
Winsock or something. I was going to contact Dell tech support, but
then I remembered, I have an old computer (on its last legs) that runs
W98SE. I turned that on, and same symptoms. Could get an IP lease, but
that's it.

So I turned the modem and computers off until I got home the next day,
and lo and behold, both immediately connected to the internet just fine.
I could have been doing some needless stuff if I had followed tech
supports advise.

So, just a word of advice, think about the problems you are having
before taking drastic measures.

Yep ... I had the same issue ... no lease from my Adelpia supplied
modem/router. I got the same run-around and a tech was going to vist me in
in a week or so. I thought it was the equiptment so I was going to exchange
it. I shut down my connection and the next afternoon I started it up just
to check ...... and guess what .... it all works just great now. UMMMMM

Well I do not know enough about cable internet to give a good explaination
since I have just cutover from DSL. My best guess is it was the network and
not the modem.
